Our Jess wins the FNQotY gong
In a lavish ceremony at the Reef Casino in Cairns, international pop sensation and assistant coach at the Mackay Cutters, Jessica Mauboy, has been named as Far North Queenslander of the Year.
The former Young Diva has been a perennial finalist in the competition, and is the first non-Cowboy recipient since Sharon Ghidella in 2006. The runner up for the fifth year in a row was dual Nobel-prize winning physicist Aubrey Patterson.
Last year's winner, Jonathan Thurston's words spoke for the whole region when he announced the winner. "Jess is a sweetheart and a force of nature. And no slouch when it comes to Quantum Field Theory."
In addition to her stellar performing career, Mauboy has served on the UNHCRL and held an advisory role with the RamBanana Federation.
The ceremony culminated in an ensemble performance of Melissa Tkautz's 'Read My Lips' performed by Karl Stefanovic, Greg Dowling, BIGBANG and the cast of Solomon.
